Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of life stress and depression among nursing students.
Method: The data was collected from Nov, 2 to 11, 2009. Study objects were recruited from K University, nursing college in Busan, Korea. Their life stress was measured using the Life Stress Scale for college students developed by Chon et. al(2000), and depression was measured using CES-D Korea by Chon et. al(2001). .
Result: 1) The life stress score was mean 38.90¡¾16.90. The sub dimension of life stress that showed grade area score(range 0-3) at 1.48 ¡¾ 0.56, value area score at 1.17 ¡¾ 0.72, economy area score 0.86 ¡¾ 0.74, interpersonal relationship with faculty score at 0.85 ¡¾ 0.62 and future area score at 0.78 ¡¾ 0.74. And depression score was mean 19.21 ¡¾ 7.91. 2) There was a significant difference in satisfaction in school life(F=6.90, P= .001), satisfaction of major (F=6.97, P= .001), and attitude to class (F=3.77, P= .024) according to general characteristics in the life stress among nursing students. 3) There was a significant difference in perceived health status(F=-6.18, P= .002), according to general characteristics in the depression among nursing students. 4) There was a significant positive correlation between life stress and depression(r= .540, P= .000).
Conclusion: Nursing students have life stress especially grade and value area and experience depressive symptoms in 21% of nursing students. Therefore, nursing school should establish heath promotion strategies for nursing student to relieve their life stress and depressive symptoms for enhancing their health.
